Noniin nyt vuoden 2022 albumi Musta Härkä yhtyeeltä. Heidän musiikki on saanut aiemmin tuomion 1 kappaleen osalta sen toteutin silloin videomuodossa. Biisi Kypärä päähän esiintyy myös tällä albumilla.

Tuomio
Yksi nosto nousee albumilta heti mieleen, se on, että albumilla on livesoiton tyyppinen energia mistä tykkäsin pirun kovasti! Ehkä ihan pienen lisän tuohon olisi tuonut, jos kitarat yms. olisi paikoin vähän kiertänyt biisin alkuun tai loppuun.
Laulu on monipuolista siihen nähden miksaus on myös mielestäni erittäin onnistunut. Se on hieman korostettu edessä, mutta sopii punkille ja kuuluukin siihen. Olen omien projektien kanssa harjoitellut myös tuota miksaushommaa ja laulujen miksaus on itseasiassa yllättävän haastavaa varsinkin kun laulutaidottomana henkilökohtaisesti joudun paikkaamaan taidon puutetta usealla raidalla päällekkäin. Tässä kuitenkin on monipuolinen ja taitava laulaja!
Tämän julkaisun äkäisemmistä lauluista tulee nostaa myös tuo, että tekniikka kuulostaa pirun hyvälle tuohon rajapintaan, joka kuulostaa särkyykö ääni hallitusti vai ei mutta siis ei säry tai ainakaan se ei kuulosta siltä. Tyyli muistuttaa eniten jotain Toni Wirtasen aikaisempia aikoja nostin hänet koska tunnettu nimi, joka herättää suomalaisille kyllä jonkun mielikuvan mitä tarkoitan. Enkä siis vertaa ääntä vaan laulutyyliä. Lyriikka on myös monipuolista ja siellä on hienoa rytmitystä, riimitystä ja tarinaa.
Kitaramelodiat on soitettu melko erottuvalla soundilla se ei ehkä yksin toimisi niin hyvin, mutta se antaa niin paljon erottuvuutta paahdon keskelle, että tässä se on oikein hyvä!
Tykkään julkaisulla, kun basso saa monessa kohtaa paljon tilaa ja basso soundi on oikeastaan korvia hyväilevä! Toki semmoinen bassovahvistimen jytinä kyllä hieman täältä uupuu? Hyviä riffejä myös bassolaineissa. Mitäs punkkia se olisi missä basso ei kuulu? Härkä kaatuu biisissä on myös hieno tuollainen ”takapotkulla” toteutettu bassolaini.
Biiseissä on tosi hyviä rakenteita, tykkään näistä, kun keskellä biisiä on hieman rauhoittelua ja latausta ja soiton onko se oikea käsite ”dynamiikka”? vaihtelee.
Nyt myös erityismainintana tässä oppia metalliyhtyeille! Tämän albumin jaksoi kuunnella hyvin alusta loppuun yhdellä kuuntelulla. Metallijulkaisuissa törmään aika usein siihen, että puutuu siihen ja tässä tapauksessa kun vertaan epäilen, että tätä ”live energiaa” ei ole onnistuttu tuomaan silloin julkaisulle. Tämä musiikki ”elää ja hengittää” jotenkin paremmin. Tottakai osa syy voi olla myös, että kuuntelen metallia määrällisesti paljon enemmän.
Rummut on pirun hyvän kuuloiset koko julkaisun ajan. Pellit sihisee ja kolisee juuri sopivasti ja sopiva balanssi rummuissa.
Mitä voisin ehkä haluta muuttaa julkaisulla?
1. - Bassoon semmoista vahvistimen antamaa jyrinää/ jytinää.
2. - Kitaroiden kiertämistä paikoin, kun live tyyppinen energia on niin pirun hyvä muuten.
3. - Biisijärjestys olisi voinut olla hieman erilainen, Lopussa Toivoo on vaikuttaa hieman täytebiisille vaikka siinäkin on hieno yksityiskohta lähellä loppua se taukoileva osuus. Viimeinen kappale on liian rauhallinen kokonaisuus päättämään julkaisun mielestäni energian tason vaihto on liian raju, vaikka sillä on selvästi haluttu tuoda sellainen haikeus ja ”loppu” niin se tuntui vaan liian rauhalliselle tuon muun paahdon jälkeen lopetuksena. Toisaalta tämä aivan lopun instrumentaali ja tuo kitaramelodia kyllä päättää kaiken hyvin ehkä tämä on lopulta vain hieman liian pitkä raita. Sanoituksia jos pysähtyy tässä myös kuuntelemaan on kappale kyllä itsessään pirun hieno!

Up next is Pintaan (2022), an album by the finnish band Musta Härkä. Their music has previously received a verdict for one of the songs, which I covered back then in video form. The song Kypärä päähän also appears on this album.

Sentence
One thing that immediately stands out to me from the album is its ”live-performance energy”, which I absolutely loved! Perhaps a little extra character could have been added if the guitars and other elements had occasionally fed back a bit at the beginning or end of the songs.
The vocals are quite versatile, and I also think the mixing is very successful. The vocals are slightly pushed forward in the mix, but that suits punk and, in my opinion, is exactly how it should be. I’ve been practicing mixing with my own projects as well, and mixing vocals is actually surprisingly challenging—especially when, as someone who can’t really sing, I personally have to compensate for my lack of vocal ability by layering multiple takes on top of each other. In this one you hear versatile and good singer!Vocals are also versatile, with great rhythm, rhyme, and storytelling.
With the more aggressive vocals on this release, I also have to mention how damn good the technique sounds right on that borderline where you wonder whether the voice is going to break in a controlled way or not. But it doesn’t actually break—or at least it doesn’t sound like it does. The style reminds me most of Toni Wirtanen in his earlier days. I’m mentioning him because he’s a well-known name, and Finnish listeners will probably immediately get an idea of what I mean. I’m not comparing the voices themselves, but rather the vocal style.
The guitar melodies have been recorded with a fairly distinctive sound. It might not work quite as well on its own, but it adds so much definition in the middle of all that heavy, aggressive playing that here it works really well!
I really like how the bass gets plenty of room on this release in many places, and the bass tone is actually ”ear candy”! That said, I do feel like there’s perhaps a little bit of that proper bass-amp rumble missing. There are some great bass riffs as well. I mean, what kind of punk would it be if you couldn’t hear the bass? Härkä kaatuu also has a great bass line with that kind of “kickback” feel to it.
The songs have really good structures, and I like it when there’s a little bit of calming down and buildup in the middle of a song, with the playing changing in terms of—what’s the right word here—dynamics? The dynamics shift nicely throughout the songs.
And now, a special mention that some metal bands could actually learn something from this! I was able to listen to this entire album from beginning to end in one sitting without getting bored. With metal releases, I quite often find myself losing interest somewhere along the way, and when comparing the two, I suspect that one reason might be that this “live energy” hasn’t always been successfully captured in those releases. This music somehow “lives and breathes” better. Of course, part of the reason could also be that I listen to metal much more frequently.
The drums sound fucking great throughout the entire release. The cymbals hiss and crash just the right amount, and there’s a really good balance across the drum kit.
What could I perhaps change about the release?
- Give the bass a bit more of that rumble and punch you get from a real amplifier.
- Let the guitars feed back occasionally, since the live-style energy is otherwise so damn good.
- The
song order could perhaps have been slightly different. At the end song: Toivoo on feels a little bit like a filler track
toward the end, even though it does have a great little detail near the
end with that stop-and-go section. In my
opinion, the final track is too calm to close the release. The change in energy
level is simply too drastic. Even though it’s clear that the intention was to
create a sense of melancholy and an “ending,” it just felt too calm as a
closing track after all the aggressive energy of the rest of the album.
On the other hand, the instrumental section at the very end, along with that guitar melody, does bring everything to a satisfying conclusion. Perhaps, in the end, the track is simply a little too long. And if you actually stop and listen to the lyrics here as well, the song itself is fucking great!
